Get Involves
Do you want to get involved in acustimulation research ?
The best quality research happens when users/patients are involved, and you can make a difference at every stage of research. There are two ways you can get involved .
Join existing research
Currently, we are supporting the TEAS project below:
The feasibility and effect of TEAS on Depressive symptoms in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Ethical Clearance Reference Number: KCL Ethics Ref HR/DP-23/24-37915
The research is spearheaded and facilitated by King’s College London, with participant recruitment conducted through Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The research equipment and technical support are provided by MDB Therapy Ltd.

Initiate your own study
If you are an acupuncture therapist or enthusiast, we invite you to join us. Soon, we will be launching an acustimulation trial for individuals. For further inquiries, please contact us via email.
For Professionals
Facts
Acupuncture treatment is the most widely used traditional medicine practice globally (WHO 2021)
Stimulating acupuncture points may induce the release of neurotransmitters, cytokines, hormones, and trigger anti-inflammatory reactions. Consequently, this can:
- Alleviative chronic illnesses
- Ease anxiety and depression
- Serve as an adjunctive intervention
Limitation: expensive, pain, acupuncturist’s experience, etc.
Challenges
- Due to insufficient fundamental biology knowledge, Pharmacotherapies and Psychotherapies have limited efficacy.
- Different interventions are required at different points in an individual's life as they move along the spectrum of mental illness
- Overlap between long-term physical conditions and mental health problems
Mental health problems cost the UK economy at least £118 billion a year – latest research (2022)
There is a significant need for new and innovative interventions to address the diverse range of mental health needs that individuals may experience over the course of their lives
Advantages
The advantage of conducting acustimulation research:
- High reproducibility
- Non-invasiveness
- No obvious adverse effects
- Self-medication, e.g. Home
MDBTherapy provides professionals with the opportunity to create a comprehensive range of interventions by combining various wave stimulations, such as light, mild electrical current, and PEMF, targeting different acupoints. This approach may be particularly effective for addressing mental health conditions.

Clinical Study
Clinical Study on the Treatment of Acute Knee Pain with Light-Emitting Diode Acupuncture (2017) investigated the effectiveness of LED acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture for treating acute knee pain. The study found significant pain reduction in the LED group compared to the sham group, suggesting its potential benefit for pain management.
Effects of Blue and Red Light Irradiation on Acupoints ST36 and SP6: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial (2013) examined the effects of blue and red LED light on acupoints ST36 and SP6, commonly used for digestive and immune system support. The study observed changes in immune cell activity and inflammatory markers, suggesting LED light’s potential to modulate immune function.
Enlist in Wellness Discovery
We are excited to invite you to participate in our groundbreaking research, conducted in collaboration with King’s College and Crohn’s & Colitis UK. This study aims to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of home-based Transcutaneous Electroacupuncture Stimulation (TEAS) in improving symptoms of depression among individuals with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
What is TEAS?
TEAS involves applying low electrical currents to specific acupuncture points on the arms and legs. This safe and well-established method has shown promise in previous research for alleviating symptoms associated with mental and gastrointestinal disorders.
Collaborative Partnership
This research is a joint effort with esteemed institutions - King's College and Crohn's & Colitis UK, bringing together expertise to advance our understanding of mental health in IBD patients. Potential Benefits: Participating in TEAS therapy may lead to a reduction in pain, relief from fatigue, an improvement in overall quality of life, and positive effects on symptoms of depression and well-being. It's important to note that while these benefits are possible, we cannot guarantee specific outcomes.
Why Participate?
Your involvement can contribute valuable insights that may help us develop more effective treatments for individuals with IBD experiencing depression in the future.
Enrollment Process
To express your interest and enroll in this collaborative study, please visit the Crohn's & Colitis UK website through this Transcutaneous Electroacupuncture Stimulation (TEAS) for symptoms of depression in IBD (crohnsandcolitis.org.uk) . Your details will be securely shared with the researcher, who will contact you directly with more information.
